DO YOU NEED ANY HELP?

Frequently Asked Questions

What is PV Solar?

PV (Photovoltaic) solar panels convert sunlight into electricity that can be used to power your home. Any electricity you don’t use can potentially be stored in a battery or exported to the grid. Solar PV can help reduce your reliance on grid electricity and lower your energy bills.

How does PV Solar work?

Solar panels capture daylight and generate DC (direct current) electricity. A solar inverter then converts this into AC (alternating current) electricity, which can be used by appliances in your home. Any surplus electricity can be stored in a battery, where installed, or exported to the grid.

What PV Solar accreditations do Optimum Solar hold?

Optimum Solar works to recognised industry standards to provide customers with safe, professional and high-quality solar installations. Our team can provide details of our current accreditations, certifications and installer credentials on request.

What comes with an Optimum Solar PV Solar installation?

Your Optimum Solar installation includes the equipment specified in your quotation, professional installation, system setup and testing, and the relevant handover documentation. The exact components will depend on your chosen system and may include solar panels, an inverter, mounting equipment and battery storage.

What is the best direction to install panels to optimise the Sun?

In the UK, a south-facing roof will generally provide the highest overall solar generation. However, east and west-facing roofs can also perform very well. Roof angle, shading, available space and your household’s energy-use pattern are all considered when designing your system.

What does kW mean?

kW stands for kilowatt, a unit used to measure power. For solar PV, the system’s kW rating indicates its maximum rated generating capacity under standard test conditions. For example, a 4 kW solar system has a rated peak capacity of approximately 4 kilowatts.

What’s the difference between AC and DC electric?

DC (Direct Current) electricity is the type of electricity generated by solar panels. Most household appliances use AC (Alternating Current) electricity. Your solar inverter converts the DC electricity produced by your panels into AC electricity that can be used throughout your home.

What are the benefits of PV Solar?

Solar PV can help reduce your electricity bills and your reliance on energy from the grid while generating renewable electricity for your home. When combined with battery storage, you may also be able to store surplus solar energy for use later in the day.

How do Optimum Solar know how many panels will fit on my roof?

We assess your property using roof measurements and system-design tools, taking into account available roof space, orientation, pitch, shading and any obstacles such as chimneys or roof windows. This allows us to design a solar array suited to your property and energy requirements.

What is a PV solar inverter?

A solar inverter is an essential part of your PV system. It converts the DC electricity generated by your solar panels into AC electricity that your household appliances can use. Depending on the system, the inverter can also provide monitoring information about solar generation and performance.

Where should I have my inverter fitted?

Your inverter should normally be installed in a well-ventilated, accessible location that meets the manufacturer’s installation requirements. Suitable locations can include a garage, utility area or loft, depending on the property and equipment. Optimum Solar will recommend an appropriate position during the system design.

Will a solar diverter give me free hot water?

A solar diverter can direct surplus electricity generated by your solar panels to an immersion heater instead of exporting that electricity to the grid. This can reduce the amount of energy you need to buy for heating water, although the amount available will depend on your solar generation and household electricity use.

Do I need planning permission?

In many cases, domestic rooftop solar panels in England can be installed under permitted development rights, provided the installation meets the relevant conditions. Some properties and installations have additional restrictions, so the requirements should be checked for your individual property before work begins. GOV.UK

I live in a listed building (or conservation area), is this an issue?

Not necessarily, but additional planning restrictions may apply. Listed buildings will generally require additional consent, while installations in conservation areas may be subject to specific conditions depending on their position and design. We recommend checking with your local planning authority before proceeding. Bristol City Council

I have lots of shading, is this an issue?

Shading from trees, chimneys or neighbouring buildings can reduce solar panel output, but it does not necessarily mean solar PV is unsuitable for your property. We assess shading when designing your system and can recommend an appropriate layout and equipment to help optimise performance.

Will I need scaffolding and do Optimum Solar provide this?

Scaffolding is commonly required for rooftop solar installations so that installers can work safely. Where scaffolding is required, this will be identified as part of the installation planning process. Your Optimum Solar quotation will explain what is included for your particular installation.

Is the structure of my roof OK to take the weight of PV panels?

Solar panels add additional weight to your roof, so the roof must be suitable for the proposed installation. The condition, construction and suitability of the roof are considered as part of the installation process, and further structural assessment may be recommended where necessary.

What maintenance is needed after installation?

Solar PV systems generally require relatively little maintenance. Keeping panels reasonably clear of excessive dirt, debris and vegetation helps maintain performance. It is also advisable to monitor your system’s output so that unexpected changes can be identified. Any inspection or maintenance should be carried out safely by a suitably qualified professional.

What is the Insurance backed warranty scheme?

An insurance-backed warranty can provide additional protection for eligible installation workmanship warranties if the original installer is no longer able to fulfil its obligations. The exact cover, duration and conditions depend on the warranty provider and policy supplied with your installation.

What is SEG?

SEG stands for Smart Export Guarantee. It allows eligible households with technologies such as solar PV to receive payments from participating electricity suppliers for electricity exported to the grid. Tariff rates and terms vary between suppliers, so customers can compare available SEG tariffs. Ofgem

What is the pay back period?

The payback period varies from property to property. It depends on factors including the cost and size of your system, how much electricity it generates, how much solar energy you use yourself, electricity prices, battery usage and any export payments you receive. Optimum Solar can provide estimated system performance and potential savings based on your circumstances.

After the system is installed what paperwork do I get?

After installation, you will receive the relevant documentation for your system. This may include commissioning and handover information, equipment warranties, electrical certification, system specifications and other applicable installation certificates. The exact documentation will depend on the system installed.

How long are the quotes valid for and why?

Your quotation will state how long it remains valid. Quote validity periods are necessary because equipment availability, supplier pricing and other installation costs can change over time. If a quotation expires, Optimum Solar can review the system specification and provide updated pricing where required.

What is a DNO?

DNO stands for Distribution Network Operator. A DNO is responsible for operating and maintaining the local electricity distribution network that carries electricity to homes and businesses within a particular region.

What is a DNO application?

A DNO application or notification is part of the process for connecting certain electricity-generating equipment, such as solar PV and battery systems, to the local electricity network. The exact process depends on the size and specification of the proposed system and the applicable connection requirements.

Who completes the DNO application?

Where a DNO application or notification is required as part of your installation, Optimum Solar can manage the relevant process associated with the solar installation and provide the required system information.

Is there a charge for the DNO application?

Whether a charge applies can depend on the type of connection application, the DNO and whether additional network work or assessment is required. Any applicable costs relating to your proposed installation should be explained as part of the quotation or application process.

How long does the DNO application take to come back?

Timescales vary depending on the DNO, the type of application and whether additional technical assessment is required. Some applications can be processed relatively quickly, while more complex connections may take longer. Optimum Solar will keep you informed of progress where a DNO application is required.
